This support fits inside the shifter boot. You must remove the shifter handle to install the support. The boot shown in these instructions is a modern reproduction of the Ford D0ZZ-7277-A and D0ZZ-7277-B shifter boot used on 1970 vehicles equipped with a 4-speed manual transmission and a Hurst shifter. This support can help prevent the kind of damage seen on the boot in the picture below.
Note the reinforced area around the arm opening on the inside of the boot. The problem is that this opening is smaller than the shifter arm when installed, so the corners are stressed when the arm is shifted. Over time this stress leads to torn rubber.
Trim the rectangular hole in the boot to fit the rectangular opening in the support. Use a small wood chisel or a sharp hobby knife to make precision cuts. You may need to trim into the reinforced area of the opening to get an accurate fit. Test fit the boot on the shifter arm - you want as little distortion as possible when the boot is installed. Remember, you want the stress on the plastic support, not on the rubber boot.
Hold the boot upside down and apply an adhesive like "The Right Stuff" or black 3M weatherstrip adhesive around the perimeter of the shifter arm opening and the rectangular hole in the support. Follow the application instructions provided with the adhesive. Press the support into place inside the boot; you'll need to stretch the boot to install the support. Allow enough time for the adhesive to bond the support to the boot.
Install the boot over the shifter arm and slide it down far enough to obtain a secure fit. Secure the boot to the transmission tunnel and install the shifter handle.
